Freedom camping in Rotorua is managed by the Rotorua Lakes Council under the Freedom Camping Act 2011. The district has a small number of designated freedom camping sites — including Sulphur Point on the lakefront, Hinemoa Street Car Park, Hamurana Reserve, Lake Okaro Reserve, and a site near Okere Falls at Trout Pool Road. All sites are self-contained vehicle only or certified self-contained, and camping is not permitted in non-designated areas. Check the Rotorua Lakes Council website for current site rules and any seasonal restrictions before you visit.
