About the Site
Hamurana Reserve sits at the northern end of Lake Rotorua, where the lake’s shoreline curves into a quiet bay backed by farmland and native trees. The site is open and flat, with direct access to the lake shore. Unlike the more urban Hinemoa Street Car Park, Hamurana has a genuinely rural feel — the surroundings are pastoral and peaceful, and the lake views extend south across the open water toward central Rotorua and the hills beyond.
The camping area operates on a first-come, first-served basis with 10 spaces, making it smaller and quieter than some other sites. Vehicles must arrive no earlier than 4pm and depart by 9am. There are no facilities provided — no toilets, showers, or fresh water — so self-containment isn’t just a regulatory requirement but a practical necessity.
Hamurana Springs Nature Reserve
The main visitor attraction in the area is Hamurana Springs Nature Reserve, a short distance from the camping reserve. The springs — Te Puna-a-Hangarua — pump approximately 4 million litres of crystal-clear water per hour from an underground aquifer, feeding the Hamurana Stream and ultimately Lake Rotorua. The reserve features a stand of kahikatea trees, giant sequoia (redwood) trees planted in 1919, a Dancing Sands feature caused by upwelling water disturbing sand at the spring source, and a 45-minute return walking loop. Entry fees apply; the reserve is open from 9am (closing at 5pm, or 6pm from November through April).
Combining a stay at Hamurana Reserve with a morning walk through Hamurana Springs is a natural pairing — the springs are close, the walk is short, and the visual contrast between the geothermally influenced lake and the clear spring water is striking.
Self-Containment Requirements
A current CIANZ Certified Self-Contained (CSC) warrant is required. The warrant card must be displayed in the front windscreen of your vehicle. Your vehicle needs to be capable of operating independently for at least three days — adequate fresh water storage, self-contained waste management, and no reliance on external facilities. From 7 June 2026, all vehicles must hold a ‘green warrant’ under updated certification standards — check with your certifier if your warrant was issued before this date.
