What ERO found

The Education Review Office’s latest report on the school is a School Report from August 2026, which rated it Doing well in 10 of its 14 areas and Working towards in the other four.

Most students gain NCEA Levels 2 and 3, including many who arrive below expected curriculum levels, and ERO found teaching structured and culturally grounded, with Te Whare o Raukura giving students a Māori-medium pathway that supports belonging. ERO judged the care of international students to be effective.

The four areas still working towards are foundational literacy and numeracy by the end of Year 10 (a small majority reach expected levels in literacy, less than half in numeracy), attendance (a small majority attend regularly) and equity, with significant disparity for Māori boys in University Entrance and junior literacy and numeracy.

Less than half of students gain University Entrance. ERO’s next steps are to raise University Entrance, make better use of junior achievement data, agree a shared strategic vision for the Reo Rua Level 2 immersion pathway, align programmes with the new curriculum and lift attendance. ERO also found one police vetting compliance gap, which the board has since fixed.

Enrolling

Students who live in the home zone have the right to enrol. Any out-of-zone places are offered under the school’s enrolment scheme, by ballot when there are more applicants than places.

The school takes day-student enrolments throughout the year on a single form, where families also say if they want Te Whare o Raukura or a place in the Tai Mitchell Hostel. Those two options have limited places and their own closing dates, published on the enrolment page, and every enrolment is confirmed after an interview.
