Selwyn School is a state, co-educational primary school for Years 1 to 6 at Old Quarry Road, Rotorua. It opened in 1965 and had 339 students on its roll at 1 September 2026.
It has no home zone, so any student can apply. Its site describes a dual-medium school with English-medium classes and Te Mātāpuna, a whānau-based rumaki Māori setting where most teaching is in te reo Māori and older students support younger ones, which the site says continues through the intermediate years. It also lists no uniform, no fees and supplied stationery and devices, free breakfast and school lunches, a bike track with school bikes, a learning-through-play new entrant setting, and a sports coordinator who runs teams in codes including touch, rippa rugby, netball, miniball, futsal, flippaball, hockey and cricket.

Home zone
No home zone: any student can apply to enrol. If more students apply than there are places, the school decides how places are offered.
Who goes here
Share of the 339 students who identify with each group. Students can name more than one, so these add up to more than 100%.
MELAA: Middle Eastern, Latin American and African.
Stand-downs and suspensions
Cases per 1,000 students in 2025, adjusted for the ages of the school’s students, compared with all New Zealand schools.
Suspensions: fewer than 5 cases in 2025, so no rate is shown.
These measure how a school responds to behaviour, and schools set their own thresholds, so they are not a measure of how students behave.
What ERO found
The Education Review Office’s latest report on the school is a Te Ara Huarau School Profile Report from March 2023. This kind of report sets out what ERO and the school will evaluate together, here how well the local curriculum and culturally responsive teaching lift fair and strong outcomes for students in both the English-medium and rumaki classes, with consistent teaching and assessment and good attendance as goals.
ERO pointed to a school culture of care and connection that supports students’ identity and belonging, staff who work together on improving outcomes, established systems for evaluating and improving, and access to expert help with culturally responsive teaching.
Next, the school will focus on professional learning so teachers use sound information to respond to students’ needs, embedding its refreshed local curriculum, keeping wellbeing and relationships with whānau and the community at the centre, and building te reo and tikanga Māori across the school.

Enrolling
The school has no home zone or enrolment scheme, so any student can apply, and it takes enrolments through the year. Enrolment forms are available from the office, which can also post or email them.
Children about to turn five can visit the English-medium or Māori-medium new entrant classes at times that suit the family, and senior staff are available to meet families to help with enrolment.
