About Hamurana

Hamurana occupies a stretch of the northern shore of Lake Rotorua, characterised by lifestyle properties, residential homes and open lake views. The settlement centres on Hamurana Road and the adjoining reserves that give direct access to the water.

Crystal-clear spring water emerges here and flows as the Hamurana Stream into the lake, creating a distinctive cool, clear environment popular for trout and birdwatching.

The name Hamurana is a transliteration of the biblical Smyrna. Traditional associations link the area with Ngāti Rangiwewehi and the ancestor Tawakeheimoa, as well as the taniwha Henerua connected with the springs.

Ownership of the springs and significant sites was returned to Ngāti Rangiwewehi through Treaty settlement processes, with the land continuing as a reserve that provides public access under iwi management.

Today Hamurana functions as a quiet lakeside community. Residents and visitors use the shoreline reserve for picnics, swimming in shallow water, and launching boats.

The springs area features a short walk through native vegetation and a stand of redwoods leading to viewing platforms over the main spring (Hangarua / Te Puna-a-Hangarua), which is among the deepest natural freshwater springs on the North Island. Water emerges at a steady cool temperature and supports wildlife including scaup, dabchick and trout in the stream.

The community has a local store and benefits from proximity to Ngongotahā for additional services while retaining a rural-lakeside feel. Facilities at the lakeside reserve include barbecues, picnic tables, toilets, a children’s playground and a boat ramp. The springs nature reserve operates with paid self-guided and guided access, reflecting its status as a managed wildlife sanctuary and cultural site.

Getting Outdoors

The shoreline at Hamurana offers easy lake access for swimming in shallow water, shoreline trout fishing (especially near the stream mouth), and boating from the ramp. The Hamurana Springs Nature Reserve provides an easy walk of roughly 30–60 minutes through forest and redwoods to the main spring and Dancing Sands spring, with opportunities to see trout and birds.

Guided cultural tours led by Ngāti Rangiwewehi descendants are available. The adjacent 9-hole golf course adds another outdoor option. Check water quality via LAWA before swimming, as lake conditions vary.

History and Heritage

The springs and surrounding land hold deep significance for Ngāti Rangiwewehi. The area is associated with traditional pā sites and the taniwha of the springs. European naming drew on biblical sources, while the springs themselves have long been recognised for their clarity and volume.

The recreation reserve was formally named in the early 1970s. Treaty settlement returned ownership of key spring areas to the iwi while maintaining reserve status and public access. The redwood grove and stream walks form part of the visitor experience today, combining natural and cultural values under iwi care.

Access and Facilities

Hamurana Road provides the main spine through the settlement. Parking is available near the store, lakeside reserve and springs entrance (adjacent to the golf course). The lakeside reserve is free to access and includes toilets, playground, barbecues and boat ramp.

Entry to the springs nature reserve is by paid ticket for self-guided walks or guided tours; toilets and a café/bar are available at the golf club near the car park.

Dogs are not permitted on the springs walk (except certified service dogs) because it is a wildlife sanctuary. The trails are generally flat and suitable for most fitness levels and pushchairs with sturdy wheels.
