Reporoa lies in a broad farming valley on New Zealand’s volcanic plateau, roughly midway between Rotorua and Taupō. The settlement serves as a service centre for the surrounding dairy industry, with the Fonterra processing plant operating since 1968.
Post-war drainage of wetlands created the productive pastoral land that supports local farms today. Reporoa features a primary school and a Year 7–13 college that cater to the rural community.

About Reporoa
Reporoa Valley sits within the Reporoa Caldera, a volcanic depression in the Taupō Volcanic Zone.
Reporoa Valley sits within the Reporoa Caldera, a volcanic depression in the Taupō Volcanic Zone. The caldera includes rhyolitic lava domes and an active geothermal field that contributes to the fertile soils once wetlands were drained after the Second World War. Dairy farming became the dominant land use and economic activity in the valley.
The Fonterra plant, established in 1968, processes milk from local farms and produces casein products and ethanol. It remains a key employer and economic anchor for the small community. The working rural landscape features farm gates, paddocks and occasional steam from the geothermal area.
The compact village provides everyday services including a general store and fuel. A free hot mineral pool known as Butcher’s Pool lies 1.8 km south of the village on Broadlands Road, fed directly from a spring. The Rotorua Lakes Council manages the reserve, which prohibits overnight parking or camping.
