Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland: Rotorua’s Coloured Geothermal Pools

Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland is a geothermal reserve 29 kilometres south of Rotorua, containing some of the most vividly coloured hydrothermal features in New Zealand. The Champagne Pool, the Artist’s Palette, and the daily 10:15am eruption of the Lady Knox Geyser have made Wai-O-Tapu one of the most visited natural sites in the central North Island. The colours — terracotta, jade green, deep orange, vivid yellow — come from mineral deposits of antimony, arsenic, sulphur, and silica around the pool rims and lake edges.

Lady Knox Geyser

The Lady Knox Geyser erupts every morning at exactly 10:15am — not because of natural geothermal pressure alone, but because the eruption is triggered by adding a small quantity of soap to the vent. The soap lowers the surface tension of the water, which releases steam and causes the geyser to erupt to heights of up to 20 metres. The presentation, which includes a ranger talk explaining the geology, runs for around 30–40 minutes.

The geyser is located a few kilometres from the main Wai-O-Tapu entrance, so most visitors drive to the geyser first (arriving by 9:45am to secure a position), watch the eruption, and then return to the main reserve for the walking circuit. Arriving after 10:15am means missing the geyser entirely — it only erupts once per day.

The Walking Circuit

The main Wai-O-Tapu reserve is accessed via a walking circuit of approximately 2.5–3km, taking 45 minutes to 1.5 hours depending on pace and time spent at each feature. The path passes through a landscape of steaming craters, silica terraces, and mineral-stained lake edges. The key features along the route include:

The Champagne Pool is a 65-metre wide, 62-metre deep hydrothermal pool at 74°C. Carbon dioxide bubbles rise continuously through the water — hence the name — while the rim of the pool is encrusted with deposits of antimony, arsenic, gold, and silver. The orange ring around the pool’s edge is a result of these mineral precipitates. The Champagne Pool is the most photographed feature in Wai-O-Tapu.

The Artist’s Palette is a large silica terrace below the Champagne Pool where mineral-laden water flows across the ground and creates patterns of green, yellow, and orange. The exact appearance changes with water levels and temperature, making it different on each visit.

Other features on the circuit include the Devil’s Bath — a lurid fluorescent green pool caused by ferrous salts and sulphur — and various steaming craters and collapsed cave systems from past eruptions.

“The colours at Wai-O-Tapu are extraordinary — nothing prepares you for how vivid the Champagne Pool actually is in person. We timed it to see Lady Knox at 10:15am first, then did the walking circuit. Give yourself at least two hours total.” — visitor account
