The Hinemoa Street Car Park is a flat, open parking area within the Government Gardens, Rotorua’s heritage precinct that surrounds the Tudor-style Bath House building, now home to the Rotorua Museum which is currently closed for earthquake strengthening and expected to reopen in 2027/2028. The site’s appeal is its location: it sits metres from the Polynesian Spa, a short walk from the Lake Rotorua foreshore, and around 10 minutes on foot from the city centre. There is a constant background sulphur smell, which is characteristic of Rotorua; this does not bother most visitors but is worth knowing if you are sensitive to it.
The site fills up quickly, particularly during peak summer months and school holidays. Because it operates on a first-come, first-served basis, arriving in the early afternoon gives the best chance of securing a space. With 17 spaces available, it is not large, and late arrivals may find it full.
Self-Containment Requirements
Only vehicles certified as self-contained are permitted to stay overnight at this site. The warrant card must be clearly displayed in the front windscreen. Your vehicle must be capable of operating independently for at least three days, meaning it holds enough fresh water, manages waste without external disposal points, and does not rely on on-site facilities. From 7 June 2025, all vehicles require a green warrant under the updated New Zealand standards to be certified self-contained. Check with your certifier for the latest requirements before travelling.
Tents, non-self-contained vehicles, and trailer tents are not permitted at this site. There are no exceptions.

The Polynesian Spa is directly opposite, a logical stop for a soak after a day on the road. Government Gardens is walkable from the car park and worth exploring for its bowling greens, rose gardens, and the Bath House building. The Lake Rotorua foreshore begins at the northern end of Government Gardens, with the lakefront walking and cycling path extending in both directions. Kuirau Park, a free geothermal reserve with hot pools, picnic areas, and bubbling mud pools, is about 1.5 km from the site on foot through central Rotorua.
