The Utuhina Stream runs right through Rotorua city, from the south-west, past Kuirau Park and under Lake Road, into Lake Rotorua near Ōhinemutu. Fish & Game calls it about as local as Rotorua fishing gets, and RotoruaNZ lists it among the productive trout streams close to the city.
Below the Devon Road bridge it is open all year to fly and spin; the middle reach opens from 1 December to 30 June, and everything above the Pukehangi Road bridge, along with all its tributaries, is closed. Council reserves and the Utuhina Walkway give public access along much of the open water.

What to Expect
LAWA describes the lower Utuhina, near the Lake Road crossing, as a deep, slow-moving stream with a pumice bed and some geothermal influence. Public access at that crossing is limited, but further upstream the stream is popular with anglers.
From the air, the lower stream winds north through a green corridor on the western side of Kuirau Park before passing under Lake Road and reaching the lake at Te Ruapeka Bay, beside Ōhinemutu.
A riverside track follows the lower stream from Lake Road, past small rapids, to the Old Taupō Road bridge and on through the Medical Officers Reserve.
The longer Utuhina Walkway runs from Old Taupō Road near Pukuatua Street to Centennial Park, through a chain of reserves. Much of the upper walkway follows water above the Pukehangi Road bridge, which is closed to fishing, so check where you are before you cast.
Like the other Lake Rotorua tributaries, the Utuhina has its own rules on size and brown trout, and a boat restriction around its mouth in the lake. Running through the middle of town, it is an easy stream to fit in before or after work.
How to Fish the Utuhina Stream
Where to fish
Stick to the open reaches: below the Devon Road bridge you can fish all year, and between Devon Road and Pukehangi Road from 1 December to 30 June.
The deep, slow water near the lake suits a slow-sinking fly or a small spinner worked through the pools. Upstream, use the reserves and walkway to reach the bank, and fish quietly in the clearer water.
What to use
- Spin: Fish & Game suggests a Zed spinner or a Veltec.
- Fly: a Hare and Copper nymph is Fish & Game’s pick for the Utuhina.
- Advice: ask at a Rotorua tackle shop or the Eastern Fish & Game office for what is moving in the stream.
Getting There and Facilities
- Walkway: the Utuhina Walkway runs from Old Taupō Road near Pukuatua Street to Centennial Park on Kotuku Street, via Jackson Park, Tihi Road Reserve, Ray Boord Park and Wrigley Road Reserve. It mixes streets, grass and formed track.
- Parking: there is parking on Mataatua Street at the northern end of the walkway and at Centennial Park at the southern end.
- Toilets: there are none along the walkway.
- Dogs: Rotorua Lakes Council has a dog exercise area on the Devon Street West reserve beside the stream. Elsewhere, dogs must be on a lead and are not allowed in reserves unless signed.
- Licences: the Rotorua i-SITE on Fenton Street and the Te Arawa Lakes Trust on Pukuatua Street both sell Fish & Game licences.
