Murray Linton Rose Gardens Rotorua: 1,500 Roses in Fenton Park

The Murray Linton Rose Gardens are a formal rose garden in Fenton Park, Rotorua, containing over 1,500 rose plants in a range of mostly modern varieties. The gardens were opened in 1970 and are named after Murray Linton, a former Mayor of Rotorua who was also a former President of the New Zealand Rose Society — the combination that made a dedicated municipal rose garden a fitting memorial. The gardens are located on Trigg Avenue within Fenton Park, alongside a playground and sports field, and are free to visit. The best time to visit is from November to February when the roses are in bloom.

The Rose Garden

The Murray Linton Rose Gardens contain more than 1,500 rose plants — primarily modern varieties including hybrid teas, floribundas, and miniatures — arranged in formal beds with lawn areas between. The gardens are best visited between November and February when the roses are in full bloom; outside this season the beds are maintained but the floral display is less dramatic. The garden is well maintained and popular for garden photography and wedding photos — the combination of formal rose beds, benches, and a park setting makes it one of the more photogenic spots in suburban Rotorua.

Within Fenton Park there is also a memorial plaque honouring New Zealand air pilots who trained at Fenton Airbase during the Second World War, adding a further layer of local history to the site.

“The Murray Linton Rose Gardens are lovely in summer — beautifully maintained with a huge variety of roses. Very popular for wedding photos, and a peaceful spot to sit in the park.” — visitor account
