Huka Falls on the Waikato River is one of the most visited natural attractions in New Zealand — a short day trip from Rotorua that can easily be combined with time in Taupo town, on the lake, or at the nearby Mine Bay Māori rock carvings. Taupo is approximately 80km south of Rotorua (around 1 hour), and Huka Falls is just 7km north of Taupo town — making this a natural extension of the short drive south. Entry to the falls is free.

Huka Falls
The Waikato River — New Zealand’s longest river — narrows dramatically at Huka Falls, compressing through a 15-metre-wide gorge before dropping 11 metres into a large pool. The result is an extraordinary volume and force: 220,000 litres of water per second rushing through a gap you could throw a stone across, generating enough power to fill an Olympic swimming pool in 11 seconds. The falls are turquoise-blue from the dissolved minerals in the water, which makes the visual contrast with the white foam particularly striking.
Walking tracks run along both banks of the river above the falls, with multiple lookout points. The main viewing platform is a short walk from the car park; the full Huka Falls walkway continues upstream toward Wairakei and downstream toward Taupo, allowing longer walks of 1–2 hours if desired.
Jet Boat to the Falls
Hukafalls Jet operates jet boat rides from a jetty below the falls, approaching close enough to feel the spray. The experience takes approximately 30 minutes and provides a completely different perspective on the volume and power of the falls compared to the viewing platforms above. Advance booking is recommended in peak season.
Taupo and Lake Activities
Taupo town is 7km south of Huka Falls and worth including in the day trip. The town centre sits on the northern shore of Lake Taupo — New Zealand’s largest lake — with cafés and restaurants along the lakefront and excellent views across the water toward the Tongariro National Park volcanoes on a clear day.
The Mine Bay Māori rock carvings at the southern end of Lake Taupo are accessible only by water — a large carving of Ngātoroirangi (a famous tohunga) was carved into the rock face by master carver Mātohi Tūheitia in the 1970s and 1980s. Chris Jolly lake cruises run to the carvings from the Taupo marina, with departures several times daily.
“The volume of water at Huka Falls is truly shocking in person — the photos don’t convey how powerful it is. Ten minutes is enough at the main lookout but worth the stop.” — TripAdvisor visitor review
“Did the jet boat after viewing from the lookout — completely different experience from below. The driver gets you absurdly close to the falls. Brilliant.” — Google review
