The Walk
The walkway begins at the western end of the lake on Acacia Road and heads east along the southern shoreline. The first 2 km to Silver Beach are flat and accessible for pushchairs and wheelchairs, passing through regenerating native bush and wetland areas with boardwalks over sedges and flax. Silver Beach offers a small sandy cove with lake access and good birdwatching opportunities.
Beyond Silver Beach the track climbs slightly with stairs as it approaches the eastern outlet where the lake drains into the connecting stream system. The return follows the same route back to the car park, offering views of the lake, surrounding hills and native vegetation throughout.
Lake Ōkāreka
Lake Ōkāreka is one of the smaller lakes in the Rotorua district, set among hills, native forest and wetlands. Its clear water supports swimming, kayaking, sailing and trout fishing, with a small settlement on the northern shore. The southern shore remains largely undeveloped within the scenic reserve, preserving its bush-covered character and providing habitat for native birds.
