The Skyline Nature Walk is a network of native bush trails at the top of Mount Ngongotahā at the Skyline Rotorua complex, reached by the Skyline Gondola from Fairy Springs Road. The trails wind through over 15,000 native trees planted on the mountain slopes, with informative and interactive panels, lookout points with views over Lake Rotorua and the city, and a resident trio of alpaca. The longest trail takes approximately 45 minutes return. Entry requires a gondola ticket; the nature walk is included in the gondola experience.

The Nature Trails
At the top of the Skyline Gondola, a network of walking trails extends through the native planting on the upper slopes of Mount Ngongotahā. The trails feature both exotic and native trees — more than 15,000 native plants have been established on the Skyline property as part of an ongoing revegetation programme. Interpretive panels at key points along the route cover the natural history, geological context and cultural significance of Ngongotahā and the Rotorua region. Interactive features include wētā hotels — small nesting boxes that provide habitat for native wētā in the plantings — and a wind-up mechanism that generates bird calls.
Seating areas at the lookout points allow visitors to pause and take in the view: Lake Rotorua spread below, the Rotorua city grid, and the broader lake district landscape extending to the horizon. Three resident alpaca live within the complex grounds and are a popular stop on the nature trail circuit.
This is a quite different experience from the DOC walking tracks on the other side of Ngongotahā — the Jubilee Track and Nature Loop that start from Violet Bonnington Reserve at the road level. The Skyline nature trails are on the gondola side of the mountain, in a managed commercial environment with plantings and interpretation, whereas the DOC tracks are through native reserve bush. Both are valid and appeal to different visitors.
“The nature walk at the top of the Skyline Gondola was a genuine surprise — we expected the luge to be the main event but the trails through the native planting were lovely, the views were spectacular, and the alpaca made the kids’ day.” — visitor account
