Hamurana Reserve is a designated freedom camping site on the northern shore of Lake Rotorua, roughly 20 minutes’ drive from central Rotorua. About the Site
Hamurana Reserve occupies a quiet bay on the northern shore of Lake Rotorua. The flat, open area offers a peaceful, pastoral atmosphere with views across the lake toward central Rotorua and surrounding hills. It operates on a first-come, first-served basis and remains smaller and quieter than some other Rotorua sites.
Overnight stays are restricted to self-contained campervans and motorhomes only. Vehicles must display a valid certified self-contained warrant. The site provides basic facilities including toilets and drinking water, though no showers or power are available. Campers must take all rubbish with them.
Hamurana Springs Nature Reserve
A short distance from the camping area lies Hamurana Springs Nature Reserve, also known as Te Puna-a-Hangarua. The main spring discharges approximately 4 million litres of clear water per hour from an underground aquifer, feeding the Hamurana Stream and Lake Rotorua. The reserve includes stands of kahikatea, a grove of redwood (sequoia) trees planted in 1919, and the Dancing Sands Spring where upwelling water disturbs sand on the bottom.
A walking loop through the reserve takes around 30–45 minutes return. Entry fees apply and the reserve operates with seasonal hours, typically opening at 9am and closing between 4pm and 6pm depending on the season. Combining a night at the reserve with a morning visit to the springs provides a natural pairing for visitors.
Self-Containment Requirements
From 7 June 2026, all vehicles used for freedom camping on council land must hold current self-contained certification under the updated New Zealand standards. This requires a fixed toilet, adequate water supply and wastewater systems, ventilation, a sink, and rubbish storage sufficient for three days of independent use. The warrant card must be displayed in the front windscreen. Earlier blue warrants will no longer suffice after the transition date.
