Tokorangi Pa Track: 11.5km Walk Through Historic Whakarewarewa Forest

The Tokorangi Pa Track is an 11.5-kilometre loop through Whakarewarewa Forest (The Redwoods) in Rotorua — the longest of the forest’s marked walking tracks and the one that reaches deepest into the forest interior. Marked with purple arrows, it takes around 3–3.5 hours at a steady pace and follows a route that begins in the famous California redwoods before climbing to the site of an ancient Māori pā (fortified village) high on the Tokorangi ridge, with views across to Lake Rotorua and Mt Ngongotaha. The pā site itself has no visible remains today, but the ridge position makes clear why it was chosen.

The Route

The track begins at the Redwoods Visitor Centre and passes through the Redwood Memorial Grove — the stand of California redwoods that anchors the southern end of the forest. From there it follows the Quarry Lookout Track upward through the Tokorangi face of the forest, through stands of Douglas fir, European larch, and eucalyptus, before diverging from the Quarry Lookout route and continuing up to the Tokorangi Pa site on the ridge.

The majority of the elevation gain — approximately 361 metres — happens in the first 5 kilometres. It is the hardest section of the walk, but once you reach the ridge, the terrain levels out and the track loops through the upper forest before beginning its descent back toward the Visitor Centre. The descent is longer and more gradual than the climb, running through different sections of the forest to avoid backtracking the same ground.

Tokorangi Pa

The track’s highest point is the site of Tokorangi pā — a hilltop fortified village of the kind built throughout New Zealand during the periods of inter-iwi conflict preceding and following European contact. Pā were typically constructed on elevated, defensible ground, and Tokorangi is characteristic in this respect: the ridge commands wide views over the surrounding forest and valley, and a position here would have been difficult to approach undetected. No physical remains of the pā are visible today — the site is marked by signage — but the ridge itself and the views it commands give a clear sense of why this location was significant.

Views

At the ridge and at several open points along the upper loop, the track offers views across the Rotorua basin to Lake Rotorua and Mt Ngongotaha on the lake’s western shore. The lake view from the upper section of the Tokorangi Pa Track is one of the better forest viewpoints in Whakarewarewa, combining the forest setting with a clear panorama that rewards the climb.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the Tokorangi Pa Track?
11.5 kilometres as a loop, taking 3–3.5 hours for most walkers at a steady pace.

How difficult is the Tokorangi Pa Track?
Moderate. The main challenge is approximately 361 metres of elevation gain concentrated in the first 5 kilometres. Once on the ridge the terrain eases. It requires a reasonable level of fitness and sturdy footwear.

What is the Tokorangi Pa site?
The site of an ancient Māori fortified village (pā). No physical remains are visible today, but the ridge location commands wide views over the surrounding forest and lake — typical of the defensive positions chosen for pā construction.

What are the views like?
From the upper section and ridge, clear views extend to Lake Rotorua and Mt Ngongotaha. On a clear day it is one of the better elevated viewpoints accessible on foot from Rotorua.

Where does the Tokorangi Pa Track start?
At the Redwoods Visitor Centre on Long Mile Road, off Tarawera Road — approximately 10 minutes by car from central Rotorua.

Is it a loop or do I return the same way?
It is a loop — the descent route is different from the climb, which means you cover new ground on the way back.

The Tokorangi Pa Track is the longest of the Whakarewarewa Forest walking options. See the cycling and walking trails in Rotorua hub for the full trail network, or the Pohaturoa Track for a shorter alternative that also reaches the upper forest and a geothermal valley viewpoint.
